Our Story
In 2020 Paul Helsby sold his business and was looking to make sure that he had the best financial advisor for him and his family. He turned to Afsar Shah, a consultant to this industry, for advice and direction. Afsar created & counselled Paul and his family through a rigorous selection process that resulted in them finding their ideal advisor. Paul was so satisfied with the outcome, that he and Afsar then created Sherwood Partners to bring this service to others.

After earning a Bachelor of Commerce degree, Paul spent the first 15 years of his working life progressing through increasingly more senior roles in sales and general management within a large multinational chemical company.
Paul went back to school and after completing an MBA at The Ivey Business School, with two fellow students, acquired Vintex Inc and for 20+ years they restructured the business, diversified into new markets and created a strong global healthcare coated textile business.
In 2020, they sold the company to the Cooley Group. With the proceeds of sale, Paul and his family were looking for a new financial advisor, and with the help of Afsar, made an informed and successful decision. They were so satisfied with the outcome, that he and Afsar created Sherwood Partners to bring this service to others.
When not working, Paul enjoys golf, keeping fit and active. He remains a Director with Trigator For Kids and its Foundation which he created 10+ years ago whose focus to is to create a community where all children feel a sense of well-being and inclusion through the participation in an active and healthy lifestyle
Paul and his wife are the proud parents to two wonderful daughters.

Afsar is a corporate lawyer by training with close to 30 years experience in the financial services industry. He has held a wide variety of roles of increasing responsibility with several of Canada’s largest financial institutions, For 10 years he helped lead Sun Life’s mutual fund dealer, including 4 years as its President. For the better part of the past 15 years, Afsar has travelled across Canada working with advisors and empowering them to develop strategies to meet the many challenges that confront them.
In 2018, he left the corporate world, and became a consultant to financial advisors focusing on helping advisors buy and sell books of business, succession planning, and better understanding and adapting to the changing regulatory landscape. When approached by Paul, he created a process to guide Paul and his family through to help select the best advisor possible. They were both so pleased with the process, they created Shewood Partners. a rigorous selection process that resulted in them finding their ideal advisor. Paul was so satisfied with the outcome, that he and Afsar created Sherwood Partners to bring this service to others.
In his free time, he enjoys golfing, working out, reading on a wide variety of subjects, and indulging his two kids.
